Cam Ranh International Airport (IATA: CXR, ICAO: VVCR) (Vietnamese: Sân bay Quốc tế Cam Ranh) is located on Cam Ranh Bay in Cam Ranh, a town in the province of Khanh Hoa in Vietnam. It serves the city of Nha Trang, which is 30 km (16 NM) from the airport.

Cam Ranh Airport was built by the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and operated by the United States Air Force for military purposes as Cam Ranh Air Base.

Cam Ranh International Airport: In 1972, the base was turned over to the South Vietnamese government. On April 3, 1975, North Vietnamese forces captured Cam Ranh Bay and all of its remaining facilities. From 1979 to 2002, the facility was used by the Soviet and then Russian Air Force because of a 25-year rent-free leasing treaty.

On May 19, 2004, after major reconstruction, the airport received its first commercial flight from Hanoi. It now handles all of Nha Trang's commercial flights, which previously headed to Nha Trang Airport. In 2007, Cam Ranh was upgraded to an international airport. In December, 2009 Cam Ranh International Airport was opened. The total invested capital is up to about 300 billion VND.

The airport resides at an elevation of 40 feet (12 m) above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 02/20 with a concrete surface measuring 10,000 by 150 feet (3,048 × 46 m)


Cam Ranh International Airport to be put into operation

The southcentral province of Khanh Hoa is expected to inaugurate Cam Ranh International Airport on December 12, 2009, opening up new opportunities for the province to develop its economy and tourism sector.

The airport is located 30km from the coastal city of Nha Trang.

In 2007, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung approved a zoning plan for construction of the airport until 2020 with a vision toward 2030. Accordingly, the airport will be able to receive planes such as ATR72, A320, A321 and B747F. It will also be expanded to provide 32 parking lots, receive as many as 27 aeroplanes during peak hours, welcome some 5.5 million passengers annually and handle 100,000 tonnes of cargo per year.
By 2030, the airport is expected to have 37 parking lots and be capable of receiving as many 37 planes during peak hours, up to eight million passengers annually and 200,000 tonnes of cargo per year.
Currently it has a VND200 billion international terminal that could receive 600 passengers per hour and includes lounges, registration areas, canteen, and souvenir shop meeting international standards.


Cam Ranh international airport terminal inaugurated

The terminal, built at a cost of over VND200 billion, has a total floor area of 14,000m², to handle 800 passengers per hour.

Under the Transport Development Master Plan to 2020 with vision for 2030, which has been approved by the Government, Cam Ranh Airport will handle domestic and international flights and accommodate B777s. It will be upgraded to serve 5.5 million passengers and transport 100,000 tonnes of cargo by 2020, and eight million passengers and 200,000 tonnes of cargo by 2030.

The same day, a Silk Airlines aircraft touched down the airport’s runway, becoming the first international airlines to the airport.

On the occasion, leading hotels in the province offered special discounts of 50-100% to passengers who arrived on the first international flights to Cam Ranh international airport.

Cam Ranh to become international airport

Cam Ranh Airport in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa will become an international airport with the opening of an official direct air route linking Cam Ranh and Vladivostock in Russia on December 12.

This was announced at a recent working session between Chairman of the Khanh Hoa provincial People’s Committee Vo Lam Phi, leaders of the Minh Nhat Ltd.Co. and representatives of Russia’s Vladivostock Avia and Transero Airlines.

Under the agreement, TU204 aircraft will be used for a flight every two weeks and the flight frequency will be increased later. Another air route will also open for flights from Moscow to Cam Ranh and vice versa.

Mr. Phi also asked hotels and guest houses to offer promotion programmes and lower service prices on the occasion of the inauguration of Cam Ranh international airport.

Travel agents’ hotels have pledged 50-70% discount in hotel room prices for nearly 130 international tourists flying from Russia to Cam Ranh on December 12.

The national aviation sector invested more than VND200 billion in building a new terminal, air traffic control station, a modern runway lights and other facilities in Cam Ranh Airport.

The capacity of the new terminal doubles the old one, which was only capable of loading 300 passengers per hour.

Cam Ranh to become international airport

Cam Ranh airport in the central province of Khanh Hoa will develop rapidly once it becomes an international gateway this year, the Vietnam Airlines chief said Friday.

The carrier plans to put Cam Ranh on its international map by launching flights to North Asian destinations, general director Pham Ngoc Minh said.

Some South Korean tour operators have promised the airlines they would bring passengers to Cam Ranh and Russian carrier Aeroflot also wants to begin services to this coastal airport, Tien Phong newspaper reported.

The airport is expected to receive 1.5 million passengers in 2010 and up to four million by 2015, Minh said. Last year, the 750-hectare airport handled 683,000 passengers.

By next June, its new international terminal is expected to receive 1.5-2 million passengers a year.

Last year, the government permitted Vietnam Airlines and the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam, or BIDV, to invite foreign investors to form the Cam Ranh airport Construction and Investment Joint Stock Company.
